Conversion Utility UTM 9 to XG

Does anyone know if Sophos ever released a Conversion Utility for UTM 9 to XG.  I was promised this over a year and a half ago and I still don't see it anywhere on this site.  I have a very complicated UTM 9 firewall that I don't want to retype from scratch.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • It is interesting. I always flag something as my personal opinion and post stuff here as my person, not the company. I am not hired to respond any of your topics nor do i have to, i am here in my free time to help other people.

Interesting enough, that some people always try to interpret my responses as a statement by Sophos.

I am quite aware of all those points. I just tried to interpret the reasons behind such limitations to you.

I know, how those migration tools work, they use most likely XML migration calls and interpret those steps from the API to get a proper configuration.

I would recommend to interact with your Sophos peer to address this, if you want.

I will be quite in this topic for now. Thanks for your feedback.

I can only see that Sophos XG is just an awarded product from your website but try to use it as professionist and you can see how bad and inaccurate it is after several years. I know that you cannot say "sorry guys, the product is bad and choose another one" but Sophos could retire the product in 2015 after few months and appear on the market later with a complete new product instead of wasting time on fixing something that is not fixable!

We are very technical and not stupid!

  •  As  mentioned, there are limitations with the current version of the UTM to XG migration assistant. As a result, additional migration work may be required or advised. I would advise to reach out your Sophos Partner to help guide you with your migration.

For reference, take a look at the Sophos Migration Assistant Guide here (specifically pg 9 -Appendix A: Conversions and limitations).

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me via DM if you had any other questions or concerns.

  • Hello FloSupport,

" there are some limitations" - a truly excellent euphemism for the useless !

You don't even know how your migration tool works because what I found in my analysis is not mentioned in the Release Notes, in the Sophos Migration Assistant Guide, or in the migration process too.

Do you know what firewall rules are not migrated during migration ( they are  lost during migration and there is no record of this ) or what network object is so badly migrated that it completely change the entire firewall policy?!?

    Oh my God!

You really do not know how your migration tool works ...

  • Flo I am not offending anyone. I was one of the first here on the forum to help people. My first Sophos installation dates back to 2006.

I am complaining that personal opinion from Sophos Staff is unacceptable. You are paid employees and your personal opinions can be understood.

Also I am complaining that listening from you is an impossible thing and the result of the product talks alone.

  • Hi

Would it be possible to PM me with the results from your analysis so that I can forward these to team who manages the Migration Assistant?

    Thanks,

  • Hello FloSupport, that's a big surprise  that you do not have my analysis.  Because I did the analysis for the European Sophos Support.

  • So... are Home Users such as myself eventually be able to access this tool if we want to migrate?  The XG platform alone is status quo confusion to figure out after using UTM for so long.  None of the interfaces really make much sense.  It would be nice to at least use the tool to migrate to an XG set up in a VM so we can see where our rules are going and how they are set up, even if it's not everything.

I don't have anything that's out of this world in terms of setting up things, but the time involved and setting things up correctly could be improved by using the tool to at least see where things are going.  I tried XG once - and dropped it just a few days later because the setup alone, even though I thought it was correct - wasn't correct at all and out of frustration was uninstalled immediately.

  • Hi

Let me check with the Team responsible to inquire about if/when a possible release for Home Users would be available.
