Software Update Failed - Stuck downloading binaries

One of our update managers has suddenly (over the Christmas/New Year break) started having issues with software updates.

In the console it shows an error of "Software update failed" and it sits on "Download binaries" and never moves

In the update manager details it has the error code of 80040401

On the actual update manager server itself I see the following errors in the application event log

Sophos Update Manager failed to update from product release 'Payload-SDDM' with version 3.50 as the installer returned an error: 1603

1603 is a MSI installer permissions error. The system account has full permissions on the Sophos installation directory though.

Any thoughts on this issue?

  • Hello

I am having the exact same problems with the "failed to launch self-updater child process! error code = 3"

I have followed the advice given in this thread, checked the reg key and all i had to do was add the extra 0 onto the end of the user data key and then also cleared out the c:\windows\temp folder but the updates still fail to complete.

Is there any other advice i can follow or is it time to seek advice from the helpdesk?

  • Hello Bluetooth,

upon a (successful) self-update there should be a MSIxxxxx.log in %windir%\Temp with a size of around 800kb. Self-update is run from ...\Update Manager\Working\Decoded-SDDM\A845A8B5-6532-4EF1-B19E-1DB2B3CB73D1\SUMSelfUpdater.exe . which in turn attempts to install the SUM.msi from the same folder and it write its actions to SUMSelfUpdaterLog.txt . Maybe you can find a hint in some of these locations.

  • This article solved resolved the issue for me, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221863

I had to delete the registry entry on, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager called PendingFileRenameOperations.  It contained the value,
    \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\sophos_detoured.dll.stf00
    \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\sophos_detoured_x64.dll.stf00
    \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdccoinstaller.dll.stf00
    \??\C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\sdcdevcon.exe.stf00
Once I deleted the registry entry, the binaries started downloading again.
