Updating old virus definitions - .ide files older than 3 months?

Hi,

I've been reading through other forum posts regarding standalone updates for Sophos.

/search?q= 20195

/search?q= 982

I need to update the virus definitions only - not the client.  The website only provides files from the past three months - is there any way I can download older .ide files that that?  Will updating the .ide files only cause any compatibility issues with the client?

Ideally I'd like to be able to:

- copy in .ide files

- restart SAV service

Anything I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

  • I see, Elbow. The article (naturally) assumes you follow the recommendations and update the software regularly. Of course if your detection data is an older version the IDE number is not listed. If you are using a VDL more than 4 or 5 versions in the past you'd have to keep track of the correct count yourself. In other words, the IDEs for SAV version 201209 (4.81) count applies only if you have VDL 4.81. But as it is just a simple copy and no checks are performed you are responsible for using the correct package. Thus if you have VDL 4.82 and copy the 4.81 IDEs you will also see a count of 601 (even though 164 of them would be redundant as they are already in the 4.82 libraries).

  • Thanks for all your help Christian :)

  • Just to confirm - if I follow the recommended procedure (copying the SAV folder over to the server), is running the setup.exe required?  Can I just point the autoupdate folder at the location of the copied files?

Presumably clicking the 'update now' right click option effectively does the same thing as running setup.exe?

  • Hello Elbow,

you've lost me on follow the recommended procedure - are we still talking about adding IDEs on a (single) client? Is server this client (now I can see why Sophos uses Endpoints)?

  • Hi again Christian,

When I say 'recommended' I mean the process by which the software and .ides are manually updated (copying the folder to the target and running the setup.exe) on a non-networked target machine.

Does right click 'update now' do the same thing as running setup.exe?

I'll use target machine rather than server/computer terminology.

  • I see (although I'm not sure which article or manual you a referring to - it'd help if you'd include a reference in the future).

Now, Update now attempts to download the updates from "somewhere" (which could also be a local folder/share), checks the integrity and then calls setup.exe. So if you have installed Sophos by copying the SAVSCFXP folder to a local folder and run setup.exe from there this will be the location AutoUpdate uses (BTW: I assume you have turned off automatic updating) when you request Update now

Running setup.exe from the local folder or a removable media is more or less but not exactly the same :smileyhappy:
