First scan and "barber pole"

I just got my Mac back with a new hardrive and migrated all the files from my backup drive.  I installed SOFOS and stated the scan and I've been staring at the barber pole for an hour ( actually found something else to do in the meantime) and it's still calculating.  I do have two externals ( one is the TM drive and one is a disk copy ( Super Duper) but I added these to be excluded.    I also tried to stop the scan and nothing happened.  The only way I can stop the program is to force quit. TM machine is active and it did what it needed with no problems.

So what's up, why so long to "calculate"?

This did not work for me.  I have tried scanning over and over again with nothing but the barber pole and "Calculating...".  I have tried what you suggested -- deleted all custom scans and added them again, with each custom scan just for a single hard drive in the system.  I have made sure that Time Machine backup process was turned off.  All to no avail.  Is there something I am missing??  I'm  running version 8.0.6C on an iMac.

I've been using Sophos for Mac Home Edition for over a year now, with no problems.  Until a month ago.  My hard drive crashed and I had to get a new HDD installed in my iMac.  I installed Mountain Lion on this new drive and used Migration Assistant to reinstall everything else back onto my hard drive from a Time Machine backup.  Ever since, I have been unable to run a virus scan using Sophos.  When I try to "..scan all files and folders on my Mac," Sophos Anti-Virus begins by "Calculating..." - but it never moves on to the scanning phase.  Last night, it ran like this for more than two hours without ever beginning the scan.  After all this time, it still said "Calculating...".  The Sophos version installed on my iMac is 8.06C.  I have already tried uninstalling Sophos and reinstalling.  To no avail.  Does anybody know what is going on here?  And how I can fix it?

What happens if you disable Live Protection?  It shouldn't make a difference, but you never know...

Same goes for physically unplugging your external drives.

Calculating for over 10 minutes is definitely an issue.

Do you have any errors from the time you start your scan showing up in the SysLog part of Console.app?

I presume this is the same issue...  I'll try to keep answering this in this thread.  Some of my original questions are already answered by the other post.

  • Hello,

Same problem here. Could you tell me how you stop it from running.

I've got mine in the calculating phase for 6 hours and can't stop it. There is not force quit. I have the arrow moving on the top right corner of my screen as if updating when I open the application it indicates it is still calculating for the scan. I press on the stop but nothing. Also the top bar is not showing the time all the other icons that were there. Please help.

  • command-option-escape to bring up force quit.  However, I'd recommend rebooting your machine, then disabling automatic updates before you try another on-demand scan -- there have been reports of this kind of behaviour when the updater kicks in in the middle of a scan.

Make sure to re-enable automatic updates when your scan is done, and remember that on-demand scans aren't usually needed -- the on-access scan runs in real-time on all files being accessed for use.

  • I have the same issue. When I try to scan "Scan Local Drives" I get the barber pole, "No threats detected" and "Calculating...". I have left it "Calculating" all night without success. If I restart Sophos, the barber poll and calculating do not appear until i try to scan.

When I set "Custom Scans" for my Hard Drive, the scan works with no "Calculating".

  • Same problem here. Used before hard drive replaced without a problem. Now it just displays "Calculating..." forever.

I am using Mac OS 10.7.5 and Sophos 8.0.11C.

I have to force Sophos to quit.

I tried turning off auto update and restarting my iMac.

  • All,

Same problem. "Calculating...." for over an hour. Here are log notes:

    2/23/13 10:44:21.038 AM coreservicesd[70]: Application App:"Sophos Anti-Virus" [ 0x0/0x18018] @ 0x0x7fdd01c3a020 tried to be brought forward, but isn't in fPermittedFrontASNs ( ( ASN:0x0-0x3e03e:) ), so denying.
    2/23/13 10:44:21.038 AM WindowServer[88]: [cps/setfront] Failed setting the front application to Sophos Anti-Virus, psn 0x0-0x18018, securitySessionID=0x186a3, err=-13066

Solution/Work Around: ==> After "Force Quit", Relaunch SAV and select "Open Sophos Anti Virus..." from the Menu Bar Drop Down or by launching the app. Click the "+" (bottom left corner) button to open a "Custom Scan". Navigate to your "Macintosh HD" or Boot Drive and select it. Name the scan and continue. Bingo! Scan begins as expected.
