Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" and SAV for Mac

Apple released Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" today, free for everyone with Snow Leopard or newer.

We've been testing our product with this release for many months now and had made numerous changes in version 9.0.3 (the version published about a month ago). The significant changes required were to change how we were building, codesigning, and installing our kernel extensions. You will now find two copies of our kext: one in /System/Library/Extensions and another in /Library/Extensions. This follows Apple's recommendation to support people transitioning from 10.8 to 10.9.

The kexts in /System/Library/Extensions are present for compatiblity with versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.9. Starting in "Mavericks" the location is /Library/Extensions. We are codesigning the kexts in /Library/Extensions to conform to Apple's security requirements.

If you have issues, please report them in this thread.

Probably just two SophosUIServer processes running...

You can quit one from Activity Monitor or simply reboot to load it correctly.

Very odd. If you log out then log in again do you still get two shields?

We set a LaunchAgent for the system (/Library/LaunchAgents/com.sophos.uiserver.plist) but there should only be one. We do not set a LaunchAgent per user, nor do we use the LoginItem feature that is in the System Preferences > Users & Groups panel. Before version 8.0.6 we used to use LoginItems though.

Can you tell me a little bit about your upgrade path e.g. what version of Sophos Anti-Virus did you have installed, and what version of Mac OS X did you upgrade from?

  • Hi Bob,

I am running SAV 8.0.20c, upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

The two Sophos logos appear at start up, stay there for varying amounts of time, and then sometimes one disappears, but not always.

Should I just upgrade to a newer version of SAV?

    Thanks,

    Larry

  • Hi Larry,

I would always recommend upgrading to version 9. Download the installer and run it over top your existing v8 install, should upgrade itself automatically.

  • Plisss remove "Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app" from Applications folder and move to *.dmg with install *.pkg :D

P.S. SAV certificate is inactive :(

    Hi moto0000,

Not sure I follow. We put the Remove app in the Applications directory so its easy to find, and also so you don't have to download anything else to make it work. As you've probably noticed we aren't using the Apple Installer any longer so a .pkg format won't work for us. But if you can describe your use case, maybe there is something else we should be doing to make it easier.

P.S. SAV certificate is inactive :(

Hmmm, which certificate are you referring to? For codesigning we use a certificate provided by Apple and it expires several years in the future from now. Ditto for our own certificates that are used to validate product update downloads.

  • I install Sophos and i don't indet remove from my Mac and the Remove app is unnecessary, mabey move the uinstall option to preferences ?

The certificate: I didn't notice that is *.app file, not *.pkg and i can't find "padlock " in top right corner :D sorry, my mistake :D

Well the size of the Remove app is about 3.5 megabytes so its not an issue with the size.  :)

We have a requirement to allow removing the product and we don't want to make it challenging for a home user to find the uninstall tool. So it went into Applications and will likely stay there until we have something better.
