Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac version 9.0 Preview

Hi everyone,

Today we published Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac version 9.0 Preview for your evaluation and use.

The headline feature for version 9.0 is Web Protection, offering protection to make web browsing safe. This is the same technology used by our corporate customers, learn more from our website: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/why-sophos/innovative-technology/web-protection.aspx

We've also worked hard to improve the existing features with a number of security and stability fixes. Version 9.0 supports Mac OS X 10.6 and up. This means we've discontinued support for all PowerPC systems and 10.4/10.5 Intel systems going forward.

This is a "preview" release. The product has passed all of our internal quality assurance testing but we are looking for additional feedback from real users in the real world. Barring any undiscovered defects, this version provides the same protection as version 8 plus protection for web browsing. The product will get regular updates too.

You can upgrade an existing version 8 installation, or set up a brand new installation with the same installer. Either way, just download and run the installer app. Today you need to "opt-in" by manually running the installer but later this year we'll migrate all version 8 installations.

If you find problems, please post about it here. If you don't have any problems we'd also love to hear that too. If you find a showstopper issue, please let us know and then reinstall version 8 until we can fix it.

Regarding the Web Protection feature, you can test the two different types of protection with these two links:

URL reputation blocking: http://www.sophostest.com/ then click the "Malware" link about half-way down the page

Malicious content blocking: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar_com.zip

In both cases, you will get a notification page instead of the real content when the protection features are enabled in the preferences.

    Memory Uage seems to be way up with version 9.  I mena really this is insane

    Drop off the last Antivirus which is the user interface i get 679MB. I just removed it and loaded 8.x latest and get less than 200MB.  That is more than 3 times the amount of memory.  I tried this on a Mac Mini 2012 and a MacBook Pro late 2011 all with 10.8.4

    We have Sophos Enterprise Security & Control, licensed for 900 users. The v.9 Preview client for Mac shows in Enterprise Console with status "Unknown". These clients are running OS X 10.8.4, and this is consistent whether they are on same LAN as relay and/or console server, or on remote connection.

    The Preview clients are also affected by the bug showing a useless generic computer name (rather than the actual machine name)which plagues version 8.

    This was uncovered recently, resolved in version 9.0.3, to be released soon. Its a problem with how the installed IDEs are reported to the console.

    Our support team needs to hear from you. There was a change back in version 8 to correct an issue in reporting the NetBIOS computer name when joined to an Active Directory domain. It appeared to address the issue for the majority of customers but also seems to have a negative affect for some customers. Technical Support is working with customers to identify the characteristics of their deployment so we can address the issue properly without causing further harm.

    I opened a ticket on this back in May, and provided SDU archive, and did some diagnostics with a tier-2 guy. Then for 4 months I got no help, no suggestions, no requests for further info, despite repeated requests for updates and leaning on our Account Exec to apply pressure from the Sales side. Yesterday I was notified that a KB article with a work-around had been published. It does not actually address the issue we reported, although it appears similar on the most superficial level.

    I'll take the liberty of forwarding you the most recent emails, including the ticket number.

    9.0.3 did not resolve this issue. It persists.
