Scanning from the Finder

Doing a bit of thinking about the existing feature set in the product and wanted to get some feedback. Today there is a feature that allows you to scan a folder or file from the Finder (right click and select Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus). There isn't any specific configuration for this option, it just uses whatever settings are configure for Scan Local Drives.

Looking for some feedback from users with strong feelings about this feature (scanning from the Finder). Something you use regularly? Would you miss it if we took away this feature? If we keep it, do you want to configure it separately? If you're thinking "meh, could live with it or without it" then no need to reply. If you feel really strongly, let me know about it in this thread.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply.  I do not see any referneces to Sophos in the services list.  What specifically would I be looking for there?

Also, command-shift-v on a file in Finder does nothing at all.  However, in using the touch pad (2-finger, click) I do get my drop-down window with all the usual options, but no "Scan with Sophos" - as I did in SL.  Did I miss something?  I am running Sophos Version 8.0.3C.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

  • If this isn't working, then the contextual menu item hasn't run on login for some reason.  Do you have a file named "Sophos Anti-Virus.plugin" located in /Library/Contextual Menu Items"?

  • Andrew - If you are refering to Library/Contextual Menu in my Finder, I do not have a category labeled Contextual Menu in the Library.  Is this where you intended I look?

I have searched for a file named "Sophos Anti-Virus.plugin" anywhere on my computer and no such luck.  I appreciate your following through with this and I am very willing to do the "detective work" if you can guide me to the path that will reinstate the "Scan with Sophos Anti-virus" in the file drop-down menu.

    Thank you - DrM

  • Hi DrM

I don't have the plugin anywhere I can find on my Mac but I do have the option to scan a file from the Services menu when Option-clicking on the file. It won't appear if you haven't first clicked on a file to scan.

Check you have it (wherever it is) by opening Keyboard Preference Pane, click on Keyboard Shortcuts and select Services in the left hand part. Scroll down the list on the right a mouse whisker and Scan Now With Sophios should be listed and ticked.

You can also get to the window by going to the Services menu when no files are selected, down to Services and select Services Preferences.

  • Not /Users/<yourname>/Library, but /Library -- it's in the same folder as your System folder.  If this isn't there, you probably have to re-install Sophos Anti-Virus, as it appears part is missing.

  • Dear Andrew & Mark,

Thank you both for your replies.  I cannot say for sure what has happened, but today it is working just fine, i.e., when I drop down a menu on a file "Scan with Sophos" is right there.  I did (after the fact) finally locate and confirm the plug-in was in fact there - the correct library, thank you Andrew -And I did check that the Sophos box was checked in the keyboard shortcuts.  In the final analysis, a day after my previous messages and after the computer being shut down, it is working.  So thanks guys, and thanks to whatever magic occurs in dreamtime...

  • Hi again DrM

The same thing happened here. On reading your difficultiess I searched for the plug-in and couldn't find it yesterday even though I had looked in all the Libraries as well as doing a name search. Today, after the Mac had snoozed all night, there it is, exactly where it should be.

In my situation I think it's because I reinstalled Sophos yesterday and often the Finder takes a while to register changes, especially if disks are set to sleep when not active.

  • I think I may just have thought of what's happening here.

When Auto-Update does an actual product update (not just a detection update) that replaces the plugin, the old architecture is torn down and the files replaced with the new versions.  The result of this is that until you log out and back in after an update, contextual scanning will not be available.

Does this fit with what people are seeing?

Sophos Anti-Virus (German) is missing a translation: Right-clicking a file or a folder in Finder ("Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus") comes without a German translation. Will there be a fix for this small issue?

The German translation is missing again on Mac OS X 10.7.4 and Sophos Anti-Virus 8.0.4C.
