Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Sorry to hear a lot of you are still having the icon staying put problem, so far the method i outlined in earlier posts has worked for me, the icon is still there.

But i am noticing another problem on both my macs (imac and macbook air), the auto update is running as it should but it is not downloading any update...the notification that comes on tells me it 'can't connect to primary server' and when i click on the icon it tells me 'failed to download update'...i am then running the update manually numerous times before it actually downloads the update (or tells me my version is currently up to date).

It seems the Sophos software is currently useless to us, if it is not downloading the updates it may not be actually doing the job it's supposed to be doing (protecting our computers) and for those still having the icon issue it means launchin Sophos from Launchpad to access the Sophos 'update now' feature...which i noticed when i diddn't have the icon does not give you the notification box telling you whether it's connected or updated or not.

Not sure what else to try, i turned off Gatekeeper in case this was preventing the updates from downloading but it's hasn't made any difference, the problem still occurs...anyone else having this update problem?

I no longer trust it to do the updates so twice a day I put the icon back on the menu and do an update. truly a pain.

Totally agree with you joelw135, right now it can't be trusted to update or protect, i too am manually keeping it updating and constantly checking the icon is still there, becoming tedius to say the least and i think we all need to be extra careful regarding sites we use and stuff we download till we have some assurance the problems are fixed and Sophos is doing what it's supposed to do again.

Has there been any feedback from Sophos at all about all the problems we are all having since the Mountain Lion update?..i have not seen any as yet!

  • I only posted to let you know that the disappearing icon problem is apparent even on Macs that didn't previously have Sophos installed.  From what I read, even though the icon isn't present, the on access scanning is still working.  I feel sure that Sophos will be addressing this problem sooner, rather than later.

  • I used sophos for a long time. But now it has come to an end. This is just too much! I have an overheated macbookpro repeatedly. And it is always the same issue sophos, spotlight and timemachine. I don't understand why sophos can't make it work. I now installed Avast. Maybe not so secure maybe it is. But my computer doesn't run hot. That is to me right now an even bigger danger than a virus or malware. My computer runs hot through Sophos very often. But a virus it found maybe once in a decade.

So I will try Avast for a while!

  • Hi,

I am running version 8.0.6 and the problem persists. After any update the icon disappears. Does this mean that the computer is unprotected?

    Thanks for any info.

  • As of yesterday after an update the icon has remained.  I am not sure if there was a fix in the update or something else has changed.

  • I just installed Sophos on my iMac, but it seems not work well, cause when i used it to scanned my computer, but after scann, i can not click  the necessary boxes to delete the virus it scanned ...

  • Have found that by going to finder, selecting Go, MacHD (I have Macbookpro),Library,Sophos

then dragging the Sphos UI Server to the Dock and keeping it there

Then when the icon disappears from the task bar I click on the SophosUIiserver in the dock and it returns.

Well its awork around until its fixed.
