Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

So is 8.0.7 out yet? You guys said it would be out beginning of September....we are now mid september.

As far as I know, 8.0.7 release has been stalled to better fix some of the bugs reported in this forum.  I don't know the ETA.

  • It's a month later and you still haven't fixed this problem!!!

  • Any news on those logs i sent for you to look over, i am still encountering the same problem (X instead of the S in badge icon, have to manually update to make the X disapear and the S reapear), mainly on the iMac which is connected via cable (not wifi)...is this software actually working or not!...i have no idea anymore, i keep running the updates to make sure it is completely up todate but i don't even know if it is actually downloading and installing the updates because the next time i look the X is back!...this used to work brilliantly with out any problems, install and forget it, did it's job with out any intervention...but now i am not so sure!

  • I still haven't been able to recreate your issue based on the logs... which is strange, as I've got an almost identical setup to you going now.  I have yet to get it to break in the same manner.  Keep bugging me though; this is a very odd case, and should not be occuring.  I'll keep plugging away at it as I have time.

In other news, it looks like 8.0.8 will be the next public release.  No ETA on it yet.

  • Ok, thanks...let me know when ya figure it out, it's still occurring so I'm hoping you can get to the bottom of it?

  • After testing the latest Sophos on a small fleet of Macs running a range from 10.7 to 10.8, I can confirm that it intermittently, but frequently, takes down most people's computers. It's typcially during the Sophos auto update process when it occurs, and it slows the computer down to a crawl. I must say that this software is EXTREMELY buggy on multiple operating systems.

  • I was running SAV 8.0.9 (all recent updates) and then I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mountain Lion.  The first day or so was fine, and SAV appeared to download detection updates daily.  After a couple of days I could see that SAV was attempting to download a large version update, and I realized I had already downloaded the installer file (savosx_80_he.10.8+.dmg), so I quit the download process and ran the installer file I had.

After install, I got a message that SAV was not completely installed, so I figured I needed to restart the computer.  On restart, the computer hung at login to my account (non-admin).  I tried restarting and logging into the admin account instead, but it hung on that also.  I restarted again without extensions, and ran the Remove Sophos, and everything was back to normal on restart.

I then re-downloaded the SAV installer from the link "Download for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion" and opened the DMG file.  On looking at the disk image label, it appears to be "Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition OS X 10.5+".  Am I getting the correct installer file, and if so, should the install be compatible with OS X 10.8.2?

  • I can also confirm this. Nearly a half year after Mountain Lion's release, the current version of Sophos for Mac is a hot mess.

On a fleet of roughly 40 Macs running mostly 10.8, some on 10.7, most of the computers slow to a crawl after installing Sophos Antivirus. This typically occurs when it is downloading an update. Having the software installed will render most people's computers useless for up to an hour and reduce productivity.

Sophos has not shown any information about an update or acknowledgement of the issue. Where are you?

  • I took the plunge and did a clean re-install of the 10.8+ installer download (8.0.8), and it appeared to install correctly, and then I had to update to 8.0.9 with the big download.  All appears to be normal now, and it updated with the latest detection updates this morning.  Haven't tried a restart yet, so if it hangs on login, I will re-post, but for now, everything appears to be working.

Not sure if the processor may be a factor in causing your "system drag" problems, but when it updates on my machine, its only using an average of 5-6% over the 8 virtual cores, which doesn't slow me down that I can detect.  What kind of processors/RAM configs are your machines?

  • Hi chrisGBS,

Can you describe the frequency of problems when updating? Is this something that happens every day? Or something that happens only once per month, when we issuse a major update?

We have had some feedback that the major updates cause grief for web browsing on some machines (e.g. "Safari gets slower") when we are doing major updates, because we download a lot of data in a very short amount of time. Not so much for the regular daily updates though. And definitely not for "up to an hour" that is very unusual.

It sure would help if you could describe your deployment e.g. what type of system, what are the major apps being used at the time, how do you access the network, do you use a web proxy, etc.

    Thanks in advance.
