Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

P.S. Please watch this space for further announcements as the launch of Mountain Lion gets closer...

  • Same issue as above but from completely new fresh system and account. Can't deploy any 10.8 Mac's. It is not a .plist issue or permissions issue (unless your installer is mucking up /Library permissions).

  • I presume you're talking about the enterprise product?

Were you using the 10.8 installer, or the 10.4-10.7 installer?

That said, the enterprise installer is a different beast to the Home Edition installer, and is best covered by Sophos Support.

If you're talking about a large collection of personal 10.8 Macs with no previous Sophos HE install, make sure you're using the 10.8 installer here:

  • Yes, Enterprise. The forums over there just point everything here for Mac issues. All the threads I saw dead ended with "Go here". I just wanted some quick info for planning and how fixes are comming along. I will just have to lurk through the murk over there. Way less info unfortunately. Have they patched the enterprise product to work correctly then as it is 2 differing beasts?

I'm not sure, as I haven't been testing the Enterprise version recently -- most core patches get rolled into both products, but anything involving the installer tends to be product-specific.  Best bet for planning is probably to fire off an inquiry to support to let them know you're affected by the issue, and enquire as to the projected rollout roadmap.

  • Was hoping these issues would be solved by now but the problems just keep changing...no longer have the disapearing icon but now it just won't update..automatically or manually...keep getting a message saying cannot connect to primary server and if i click on the icon which now has a little x in it, it says failed to download update...i really do not know if sophos is actually working on not anymore!

  • If you have an X, Sophos is not protecting your computer, even if parts of it are still working.

In some areas the primary servers have been under a heavier load than usual lately; if you manually run autoupdate with your network connection enabled, does it connect correctly and remove the X?

  • Not always, sometimes have to run the maual update 3 or 4 times before it works properly and actually downloads the update...I am having to do my iMac again right now, the automatic updates are not working at all, they run but do not update and thus leave me with the X in the little icon which is when I have to run the manual update over and over till it works and replaces the X with the S that should be there.

  • Are you having any other network connection issues?

Also, are you on WiFi, or are you using a physical cable?

It sounds like your copy is unable to reliably contact the update servers; this could be an issue with the localised server in your area (service provided through Akamai) or with your own network connection.  If it's with the server, you might be able to fix it by changing your DNS to a different DNS server (8.8.8.8 to use Google DNS, etc).
