Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Thanks to everyone for their reports and especially those who have been helping others find potential solutions to this issue.

The problem with the disappearing taskbar icon occurs when the product updates itself. It does not impact the actual protection provided by the product - the on-access scanning component is still functional. The only impact is with the products ability to communicate with the user through the icon and through pop-up messages.

It is caused by some of the internal changes Apple have implemented in Mountain Lion regarding how background processes are able to launch processes that interact with the user interface.

The engineering team have been working hard on a fix to this issue and we hope to be able to release it very soon now. I'll post more information here when I can confirm this.

Thanks again for your patience. I realise this has not been a great experience for early adopters of Mountain Lion and we'll be doing what we can to prevent this kind of thing happening in future.

    Regards

  • And I would just like to add a big thanks to everyone at Sophos who works on this to provide us with a FREE antivirus solution, so I can easily put up with a few niggles here and there and dragging the UI server icon into the dock as a workaround is not really a big deal at all. Good work guys, keep it up.

  • Well, the *enterprise* version has the exact same problem, so take that as you will....

  • Did an uninstall/reinstall and all seems to be working normally now. The Autoupdate window shows new updates every hour and the icon has stayed put after 2 deep sleeps and wake ups. Looks as if I can now remove the UIserver app icon from my dock.

  • I had removed and reinstalled all files and preferences, and now have a problem where I start a HD scan and it stops and closes before complete.

This issue is covered by a different thread.  Try unplugging your external drives before doing a local scan for the first time.  Likely the issue is with one of the external devices (or a network share).

  • Thanks, for me that is hard to do as the external drives are backing up as I work. And at night they do a SuperDuper backup.

    :1009044
  • Ah; it is entirely possible that this is your answer: SuperDuper and Sophos don't always play nicely together when they're both running.

I'd suggest creating a custom scan that doesn't include your external drives, and then other custom scheduled scans for the external drives set to run when they aren't busy.

  • Late this morning, Aug 10, the problem of the disappearing Sophos icon appears to have been corrected through a update/download. The update went normally...the Sophos icon disappeared for a moment and then reappeared. Following another update in the 1:00 PM (CDT) hour, the behaviour was again normal with the icon reappearing upon completion. Thanks Sophos!

Found the same thing with my Mountain Lion installation; the Sophos icon does seem to have settled down.

However, when I switched back to my primary boot partition (Lion), there were two Sophos icons on the menu bar. Each icon was able to put up its own "About Sophos Anti-Virus" window when that menu item was chosen. Choosing not to show status in the menu bar only eliminated one of them; choosing to show it again put the second icon back. Then, after an automatic update, in which both icons showed the moving arrow, one icon disappeared and we're back to normal again, at least for now. Notably, while the icon is there, the updater doesn't show in Login Items as it used to. Curiouser and curiouser.
